An A to Z List of Diseases I have successfully treated using my own version of Homeopathy aka “Joepathy”.

Acid Reflux Disease (GERD)

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also called Acid Reflux, is a chronic condition in which liquid content of the stomach leaks back (refluxes) into the esophagus. The abnormally refluxed gastric contents contains highly corrosive Hydrochloric Acid and Enzymes. When this refluxed gastric juice touches the lining of esophagus, it causes heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest or throat . Acid reflux disease symptoms include chronic heartburn symptoms and some patients have even ended up in hospital in the early hours of the night fearing that they were having a heart attack.

The therapy that I have prescribed to hundreds perhaps thousands of patients is as follows:

Nat Phos 6x Biochemic Cell Salts dose 2-6 tablets taken thrice daily depending on the severity of the GERD. Start with 2 but if there is no relief in 30 minutes double the dose.

Arnica 30c in the Wet dose taken twice daily made as per instructions below:

The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:

Order the remedy in the Ethanol pack also referred to as Liquid Dilution in a bottle preferably with a dropper arrangement.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops of the remedy into the bottle and shake the bottle hard before you sip a capfull of the bottle or a large teaspoonful which is the dose.
Shaking the bottle hard is homeopathic succussion and this shaking must be done every time before sipping a capful of the bottle twice daily.

It will be necessary that the patient changes his/her lifestyle and food habits to ensure that the GERD is permanently cured. It is essential that the stomach is not overloaded by eating large meals but more than 3 small meals daily are permitted. This is to ensure that the stomach is returned back to normal function by loading small quantities of food which will help to stabilize its normal functions.

Avoid fatty foods and raw salads which are difficult to digest. Do not drink over a sip of water after a meal but it is essential that the patient drinks up to 3 ltrs of water or other liquids daily. Avoid all canned beverages like cola drinks, coffee, preserved meats like sausages, ham and bacon as the Saltpeter antidotes all homeopathic remedies.

Do not go to bed or lie down after a meal for at least 2 hours after. This is to prevent the food refluxing into the Esophagus.

Exercise is essential and it is recommended that the patient sweats it out if possible daily by doing a brisk walk for at least 45 minutes. This exercise helps the body to regain its natural balance and overcome the GERD with the excess flow of gastric juice.

Many patients come to me for assistance when they discover that the standard drugs prescribed by their doctors have not helped them and they realize that these drugs which are usually PPI’s (Proton Pump Inhibitors) are causing other serious side effects when they are hooked on them. These cases are difficult to treat but many have been cured,  even those who have suffered from GERD for many years, some for even 5 years have been cured.

If you wish to read the many cases I have treated you are invited to visit the ABC Homeopathy website on:

http://www.abchomeopathy.com/forums.php

Type “GERD” into the Search Box and read the many cases that I have treated, the large majority of which I have cured.

Nat Phos 6x is a Biochemic Cell Salt and I discovered some years ago that it helps to accelerate the passage of food from the stomach down into the gut. It also helps to reduce weight by up to 1kg per week.

I shall copy the notes of Dr Schuessler who first discovered 12 Cell Salts about 150 years ago on Natrium Phosphoricum:

Natrium Phosphoricum

Sodium and Phosphate ions are to be found in our body in the muscle, nerve and brain cells, in the blood corpuscles and in the tissue fluids. According to Dr Schuessler, Nat Phos splits the lactic acid, which is produced by the work of muscles into carbonic acid and water. The carbonic acid is absorbed by the sodium phosphate and brought to the lungs where it is eliminated in the process of breathing. If sodium phosphate is lacking, there results an excess of lactic acid and consequently a sour taste, heart burn, sour stools, vomiting of sour, caseous matter, particularly in babies who are overfed with sugar and milk. If lactic acid reaches the lymphatic glands, the albumin of the lymph glands coagulates and the gland begins to swell. In the initial stages of swelling of the lymphatic glands therefore, Nat Phos has a healing effect because it can split lactic acid. Nat Phos further assures that the uric acid of the blood which is formed by the splitting up of the albuminous substance is kept in solution and secreted by the kidneys. Should this not be the case, uric acid will be deposited in the joints. The sequels are Rheumatism. Gout, Sciatica, Lumbago. In the Gall, Nat Phos saponifies the fatty acids which have been consumed with the food. It is hence indicated against digestive disturbances resulting from excessive consumption of fat.

Acid Reflux – ED

From ductmanon 2011-01-1322 replies229 viewsI been suffering from Acid Reflux most of 35 years. I’ a 63 year old male. I’ve been on most of the prescribed acid blockers. Over the last 4 years I started having sex issues and recently realized a link to the blockers. I was able to painfully experiment and get off the medication to test it. The pain and misery was so over whelming I had to go back on it. But after 2 weeks the sex problems diminished. I have tried every home and natural health remedy out their with no success.I had my gallbladder taken out 2 years ago also. Is their any advice out their. I want to get off the medication but not kill myself doing it. Thanks Mike

Hi Joe
Yes as you instructed the
Nat, 4 after each meal and the Arnica 1 teaspoon in the morning when I rise and 1 before I go to bed.

Found a few more safe things to munch when get a little burn, like sip of water,a few soda cracker’s and it seems a Mango Lassi, a little sip of ginger ale soda with no sugar warm and flat as well as a piece of cucumber sometimes helps. All is well. Praise God no medication and going strong.

Bless you Joe
Mike

From Joe De Livera on 2011-02-18

Glad to learn that you are on the road to recovery. It is unlikely however that you will ever be cured as I believe that your constitution after 35 years of gastric abuse cannot ever be cured. However I believe that we have achieved the impossible and you have been blessed with a reasonable state of health with my Joepathy and you do not have to depend on the dangerous PPI drug that you have been using to digest the next meal anymore.

You reported that you had a cholecystectomy some years ago and you must know that this was totally unnecessary as if you only had used my therapy for GERD, you would not have had any need to remove it. Your surgeons would have been delighted to relieve you of this vital organ in your body which produces the extra gastric juice Gall, which is essential to help digest fats which I I presume you are now compelled to avoid.

You may like to know that statistically over Half a Million patients in the USA have their Gallbladders removed so very unnecessarily every year and they provide a constant source of revenue to keep their surgeons happy. I understand that surgery costs over $15000 and you can figure out how much money and unnecessary suffering the general public can save themselves from, if only they use my Joepathy in time for GERD, which is the root cause of all gastric distress.

I note that you eat a snack to keep your hunger pains at bay but I would prefer that you do not eat Cucumber as it contains some chemical element which does not digest easily and can cause more GERD.

Feel free to report progress from time to time here on the ABC.

Joe
It was the gallbladder removal that was a wake up call. by the way total bill paid by my then hospitalization was $26,000.00 I was rushed to emergency room and given tests and advised that it must be removed immediately or the risks were life threatening.Up to then I had been focused on reliving myself of drugs by alternative natural foods, vitamin and enzyme sources, which I said earlier was a aid but only worked temporary. I really never heard of Homeopathy till a friend of mine in Arizona was cured of her sinus problems. That was September last year. In a nearby community their is a Homeopathy practitioner but due to complications in my life as well as her scheduled demands I was unable to get an appointment. It was then in January after trying to get an appointment I decided to look for another and I bumped into the ABC site and went on the forum pleading for some help. And as you mentioned earlier you were reluctant knowing I was a tough case but moved by your compassion as a healer you responded to the call. If I have to take the Nat and Arnica for the rest of my life as well as a few little things this is a small price to pay for such a great reward. I have given testimony to many of Joe the Healer from Sir Lanka. I assume your instructions are continue with the Nat and Arnica in dose and frequency as prescribed and report progress time to time. Joe I owe you, call on me anytime. I’m here. In Gratitude

Acne

Acne is a skin problem in which skin structures having a hair follicle develop as a result of hormonal changes in adolescents. These structures are linked to microscopic glands in the skin which secrete oily matter.

Treatment of Acne in Teenagers

It is not commonly known that Arnica 6c in the Wet dose can cure Acne in young adults. It is possible that Arnica works by increasing the blood supply in the body especially in the micro capillaries under the skin which in turn clears the debris and thereby prevents the bacteria that are present in the hair follicles to form a lesion which eventually ends as Acne. The patient will notice that the Acne dries up without the usual suppuration in a couple of days.

I have helped hundreds of teenagers to overcome their Acne with Arnica 6c in the Wet dose, taken twice daily. It is also necessary to apply the remedy water on the lesions on the face with the finger tips to accelerate the cure.

Arnica is not listed in the Repertories and Materia Medicas now in use in classical Homeopathy and it is my hope that this remedy will be listed in text books that will be printed in the future. Arnica can be listed as the Ultimate Remedy for Acne.

The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:

Order the remedy in the smallest Ethanol pack aka Liquid Dilution in a bottle with a dropper arrangement.
If this is not available the Dry dose in pellets may be used but this is not as effective as the remedy in the original Ethanol pack.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops or 5 pellets of the remedy into the bottle and shake it hard to produce bubbles. This is homeopathic succussion and must be done every time before a capful of the bottle which is the dose is taken as directed.

It is understood that no other drugs or remedies that will be used if this Arnica therapy is used.

Allergies

An allergy is an immune system disorder that affects 1 in every 3 people. These can be reactions to the commonest of substances, as there can be allergies for almost anything (sometimes even anyone).

Arthritis

Arthritis is a chronic and inflammatory disease affecting the discs and bones. It has several symptoms and treatments.

The therapy i have prescribed which has invariably helped patients is Argentum Metallicum 6c in the Wet dose taken twice daily.

MORE INFORMATION ON OSTEO ARTHRITIS

If the patient’s Osteo Arthritis has not affected the Meniscus Cartilage, there is every possibility that Argentum Metallicum 6c in the Wet dose can cure the patient of the pain associated with Arthritis. It is the grating of the 2 bones, the Tibia and the Femur without the cushion of the Cartilage that results in Osteo Arthritis and relief is usually noticed on the third day after the commencement of the therapy.

A matter that amazes me is that there is no blood supply to the Cartilage which is essential for repairing and regrowing the Cartilage in the joints. How then can the cartilage regrow and thereby reduce and eventually eliminate the pain associated with Arthritis?

I have helped many patients who were on a daily dose of various analgesics which only served to deaden the pain temporarily but not CURE the condition.

Argentum Metallicum 6c in the Wet dose taken twice daily usually will help the patient.

The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:

Order the remedy in the Liquid pack in Alcohol, also referred to as Liquid Dilution in a bottle preferably with a dropper arrangement.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops of the remedy into the bottle and shake the bottle hard at least 6 times before you sip a capfull of the bottle or a large teaspoonful which is the dose.
Shaking the bottle hard is homeopathic succussion and this enhances the effect of the remedy on the user.

Asthma

Asthma is a common disease of the respiratory system. It comes from the Greek word “aazein”, or “sharp breath Allergens, common cold or even other triggers like exercise or stress can cause the airways or the tubes that carry air to the lungs. These become narrow and inflamed, with the build up of excessive mucous and breathing becomes a problem. A distinct wheeze can be heard during the entire cycle of respiration.

The remedy I prescribe for Asthma is  Nat Sulph 6c in the Wet dose made as follows:

The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:

Order the remedy in the Ethanol pack also referred to as Liquid Dilution in a bottle preferably with a dropper arrangement.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops of the remedy into the bottle and shake the bottle hard before you sip a capfull of the bottle or a large teaspoonful which is the dose.
Shaking the bottle hard is homeopathic succussion and this shaking must be done every time before sipping a capful of the bottle just once daily preferably just before bed.

Patients have reported that they have experienced almost immediate relief as they discovered that they had slept deeply during the night without any problems with their breathing which many had been denied for years when they were compelled to wake up to gasp for breath.

Ars Alb 200 in the Dry Pellets can help in the case of chronic patients to be used on a SOS basis when they would otherwise be compelled to seek assistance with Nebulization in a clinic. The dose is 4-6 pellets taken sublingually (under the tongue). The patient will usually discover that this remedy will clear up the Asthma attack within a few minutes. It must be noted that this remedy cannot be used on a daily basis.

Another remedy that I have prescribed to patients who were not helped by the Nat Sulph therapy is Blatta Orientalis 6c also taken in the Wet dose as per instructions above.

Back Pain

The back is the workhorse of human body. This remarkably strong structure literally carries the burden of the entire body, and is responsible for almost every move you make. This makes it susceptible to injury, and the resultant back pain can be quite immobilizing. It is estimated that four out of five adults suffer from back pain at least once during their lifetimes, and it is also one of the main reasons for being absent from work.

Baldness

Baldness is the condition wherein the person looses the growth of the hair. It occurs both in men and in women. It begins with hair thinning and then loosing hair. Seen usually among males, the condition is attributable mostly to genetics.

Bronchitis

Is your cough unbearable? Is a normal cough syrup seeming absolutely useless? Then, you might have bronchitis.

Burns

Burn injuries can be very painful and tend to open up pathways for other infections. Burn injuries are segregated into degrees (1st degree burns, 3rd degree burns, etc.) and are treated according to their degree of severity.

Cauisticum 200 in the Wet dose taken every 2-3 hours will give almost immediate relief when the acute burning pain is lessened in a few minutes after taking the first dose. It is also recommended that the remedy is applied directly on the burn as this too helps to accelerate the cure.

Arnica 6c in the Wet dose can also be used with the Causticum 200c.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or Median Neuropathy at the Wrist is a painful disorder of the wrist and hand.

Colocynthis 200 in the Wet dose has helped some patients who present this ailment.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol, the culprit of many cardiovascular diseases is actually an essential component of cell membranes in mammals. Basically it is a waxy steroid in the cell membranes and is transported in the blood plasma of animals. It is classified as a sterol in scientific terms.

I have been taking Arnica 30c in the Wet dose nightly since 1996 and can vouch for the fact that it has helped me to maintain my Lipid Profile at a level equivalent to a Teenager’s. My BP is <120/80 with Pulse <65 at rest. Cholesterol and Triglycerides are at optimum levels.

I do not have any pain or other ailment in my body at age 82 and my skin does not have any wrinkles which is the usual sign of aging.

I can recommend it to anyone who would like to experience an improvement in their state of health to also follow my example and take a dose of Arnica 30c nightly.

It is the nearest approach to that elusive “Fountain of Youth” for which many Billions have been spent in its quest.

Dengue ——  Treatment that has worked in Sri Lanka

Dengue is a virus borne disease which is highly contagious and is transmitted by the Aedes Egyptii mosquito which can be identified by the zebra like black and white markings on its thorax and abdomen. The onset of the disease usually starts when the patient feels unwell and runs a low temperature with acute body pains and splitting headache which usually follow within 24 hours after the onset of the  disease.

I am copying below the notes on Dengue from the WHO website on:
http://www.who.int/topics/dengue/en/

“Dengue is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with any one of the four dengue viruses. It occurs in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world. Symptoms appear 3—14 days after the infective bite. Dengue fever is a febrile illness that affects infants, young children and adults.
Symptoms range from a mild fever, to incapacitating high fever, with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and rash. There are no specific antiviral medicines for dengue. It is important to maintain hydration. Use of acetylsalicylic acid (e.g. aspirin) and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. Ibuprofen) is not recommended.

Dengue haemorrhagic fever (fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding) is a potentially lethal complication, affecting mainly children. Early clinical diagnosis and careful clinical management by experienced physicians and nurses increase survival of patients. ”

I have used the Homeopathic Remedy  Eupatorium Perfoliatum 200c in the Wet dose to treat many patients presenting Dengue and the majority have confirmed that they experienced perceptible relief in about an hour after their first dose, when their throbbing headache left them. They also reported that their excruciating body and joint pains left them within 2-3 hours.  I have received reports from patients who used this therapy that they were CURED within just 3 hours and they were patients who were treated by me within a few hours after they first presented Dengue.

Some patients have reported that they suffered from a low temperature on the second day, perhaps due to the Virus attacking the temperature control center of the body. The patient must rest and drink plenty of fluids till the temperature drops and if it continues, it is best to enter hospital as it is possible that the Blood Platelet count may have dropped in the case of the Hemorrhagic type of the Dengue Flu when more invasive methods of treating the disease with a Blood transfusion may be called for.

It is best to treat all cases of a Fever as Dengue as early as possible at this time,  as we are in the midst of an Epidemic of Dengue in Sri Lanka where I live. There have been reports of many fatalities from Dengue reported in the press and it is essential that this disease is treated with this Miracle Remedy which I shall be glad to supply free of charge to anyone who calls me on 2439422 in Sri Lanka.

The treatment schedule is as follows:

The Remedy is Eupatorium Perfoliatum 200c and this can be purchased from any Homeopathic Pharmacy in your country in the Liquid Dilution in Alcohol. Eupatorium Perfoliatum 200 is used in the Wet dose taken every 2 hours for the first day and every 3 hours thereafter till the patient is cured.

Depression

It is a state where you are mentally low and have no enthusiasm or vigor left to do things. It basically refers to a low mood and aversion to any kind of activity.

Diabetes

Diabetes Mellitus (DM), commonly referred to simply as diabetes, is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by abnormally high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). Blood glucose levels are controlled by hormone insulin produced by the pancreas. When production of insulin is insufficient it affects normalization of the glucose level . The two most common types of diabetes mellitus are due to either an insufficient production of insulin (in type 1 diabetes), or insufficient response by the body to insulin (in type 2 diabetes and gestational).

My default remedy for Diabetes is:

Arnica 6c in the Wet dose.

Patients have reported after careful tests that their Blood Sugar levels dropped by about 20% within 12 hours after the first 2 doses of this remedy. Some have reported that they were able to stop their dependence on the drugs, usually Metformin, they were using which were prescribed by their doctors.

One patient who was a Diabetic for 2 years with a Blood Sugar level of 535 and was taking 850mg Metformin twice daily reacted violently to the drug with a serious case of Dermatitis which was oozing. As the drug was not helping him he was advised to use Insulin but he decided to consult me and I gave him my default Arnica 6c therapy with instructions to take the drug with the Arnica and observe how it helped him. He decided to use only the Arnica unknown to me and discovered that his BS levels dropped down to normal within 12 hours. He has been taking Arnica alone for his Diabetes for the last 6 months and recently surprised me when he informed me that he had not taken Arnica for 10 days as his bottle was empty. He had checked his BS level and discovered that it was at 110 which is the top level for BS. I cautioned him and gave him a new bottle and he reverted back to a safe BS level of 100 in a few hours.

It can be presumed that his Diabetes was controlled as a result of his Pancreas being kick-started to produce Insulin on demand and it is my hope that my theory is investigated by those who are interested in using Arnica 6c to control Blood Sugar levels in Diabetics.

Diaper Rash

Due to the moisture and slight roughage of the nappy pad, infants develop a reaction of boils, itchiness and mild swelling of the skin on the affected area.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a condition wherein the patient experiences frequent and fluid bowel movement. It is, in fact, the second largest reason for death of infants world wide.

Matchstick remedy cures Diarrhoea

I would like to share my experience in the use of the Match Stick Remedy which I have used and prescribed for a multitude of stomach problems including Diarrhoea.

It comprises lighting a match with another held in the hand which is in turn ignited and doused immediately in a glass of water. This routine is repeated twice to make the remedy more effective. The water is the remedy and can be sipped every hour till the Diarrhoea or watery stools stop.

I have prescribed this remedy to many patients and they all confirm that within a few hours their diarrhea had stopped. Some of these patients had been prescribed antibiotics and other drugs by their doctors but they had failed to arrest the diarrhea which sometimes can only be cured by total abstinence from all food and drink and the patient is put on a IV drip.

Many patients also reported that they had slept very deeply after their dose of the remedy which they had taken shortly before sleep.

The match stick remedy has invariably worked in some miraculous manner and it is my hope that
anyone who uses this simple remedy which can be used anywhere even in the most remote circumstances where you will never be out of range of a humble match stick which you can get in any part of the world, will report their findings on my Website.

HOW JOEPATHY EXPELLED ANOTHER KIDNEY STONE

This is the copy of a post I made on the ABC Homeopathy Forum dated March 15 2010

http://www.abchomeopathy.com/forum2.php/219363/

I am happy to report that I have had the same success a few weeks ago with another patient whom I had been treating for the last 3 months who was diagnosed and showed 3 Kidney Stones in his left Kidney. This is the third case that I have treated with this same protocol and I am recording it in the hope that other Homeopaths will remember this therapy which has helped 3 patients all of whom were diagnosed with Kidney Stones which were clearly visible on their X’rays.

The remedy I used was Berberis Vulgaris 6c in the Wet dose taken twice daily and this appeared to have dissolved the Calculus which was Calcium Oxalate Crystals in about 3 months as there was only one in a recent Xray which was causing excruciating pain for which his doctor has prescribed 2 tablets Ponstan twice daily which was barely able to control his pain.

I gave him Colocynthis 200c in the dry Lactose Pellets and he took 3 doses each of 6 pellets sublingually in 2 days and reported that he felt excruciating pain in his abdomen which seemed to be moving downwards in the evening of the second day. He had a light dinner and shortly after brought it all up. He could not sleep but went to the toilet in the early hours of the morning where he had fainted with the pain when he was passing urine which was bloody and he had expelled the stone.

He is now fully recovered and does not experience any pain. I have however given him Ciprofloxacin 500 taken twice daily for 6 days to cover any possible infection in the Ureter and the Urethra which can occur due to the laceration in the passages.

I cannot copy the link to the original post on the Homeopathy and More Forum but anyone interested can search for this article on it.

I would like to share with members the therapy I used a few days ago to treat a Kidney Stone which can be useful to members who may be diagnosed with one or who may find that a friend suffers from a Kidney Stone. It is interesting to note that modern medicine does not seem to have any treatment for Kidney Stones other than shattering them with a  Lithotrypter or by using drugs to dissolve them which usually does not seem to help the patient quickly. This patient had been under treatment by specialists of the General Hospital in Colombo for some months but with no amelioration of his condition.

He presented with acute pain in his back which had been diagnosed by specialists as Kidney Stones. An Xray did not show any shadows but his Urine report showed that he had Calcium Oxalate Crystals ++.

I gave the patient Berberis Vulgaris 6c in the Wet Dose but this did not help him for a week as this remedy works slowly to dissolve the stones. On the 8th day he reported acute pain radiating down from his right kidney and was unable to stand erect. I diagnosed that a stone had been discharged from his right kidney and that it was blocking his right Ureter. I gave him 6 pellets Colocynthis 200 in the DRY Dose which he took sublingually at around 7.00PM. He reported on the morning after that he had woken up around 2.00AM with excrutiating pain, the likes of which which he had never suffered before in his life. The pain radiated from his back down through his abdomen on the right side and down to the bladder. His urine was bloody shortly after.

He had passed the stone with just one dose of Colocynthis 200 and he is now completely free of all pain and discomfort. A urine test does not show any signs of Calcium Oxalate Crystals.

I am recording this incident in the hope that members will remember that Colocynthis 200 in the DRY dose has an almost miraculous effect in dislodging Kidney Stones. Berberis Vulgaris 6c in the Wet Dose will slowly dissolve the Calculi and it helped this patient to dislodge the stone that was in his right kidney and its passage through the Ureter caused him this unbearable pain which was so bad that he had passed out for a short while.

I have advised him to take a teaspoonful of Berberis V 6c in the Wet Dose daily to ensure that his urine does not cause another Kidney Stone to form and to also drink at least 3 liters of liquids daily.

KIDNEY STONES

I am copying below an article on Kidney Stones which appeared in The News International which is of interest.

Kidney stones are as old as the human civilisation. Scientists have found evidence of their existence in a 7000-year-old Egyptian mummy. Despite the passage of several millennia they still constitute one of the most painful urologic disorders.

Three million people visit health care providers and more than half a million go to emergency rooms every year for treatment of kidney stone problems.

A kidney stone is a hard mass developed from crystals that separate from the urine within the urinary tract.

Normally urine contains chemicals that prevent or inhibit the crystals from being formed. These inhibitors, however, do not work for everyone. If the crystals remain tiny, they travel through the urinary tract and pass out of the body in the urine without being noticed.

Kidney stones may be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a pearl. Some stones are as big as golf balls! Stones may be smooth or jagged. They are usually yellow or brown. About 90% of stones that are 4 mm or less in size usually pass spontaneously, however 9% of stones are larger than 6 mm. (By the way gallstones and kidney stones are not related with each other. They form in different parts of the body. Someone with a gallstone is not necessarily more likely to develop kidney stones.)

Different studies on kidney stones showed that there are four types of stones. The most common type contains calcium that is a normal part of a healthy diet. Calcium that is not used by the bones and muscles goes to the kidneys. In most people, the kidneys flush out the extra calcium with the rest of the urine. People who have calcium stones keep the calcium in their kidneys. The most common combination is called calcium oxalate.

Infection in the urinary system may also cause the formation of stones in kidney. These stones contain the mineral magnesium and the waste product ammonia. Uric-acid stones may form when the urine contains too much acid.

Genes also play a role in inheriting the tendency to develop kidney stones in many patients. More than 70 percent of people with a rare hereditary disease called renal tubular acidosis develop kidney stones.

Usually, the first symptom of a kidney stone is extreme pain in back, bloody urine, fever, chills, vomiting, the urine that smells bad or looks cloudy or a burning feeling when you urinate. Sometimes nausea and vomiting may also occur. Later, pain may spread to the groin.

Most people think that getting rid of an existing stone is the end of the problem but stone formation can happen again and again. Kidney stones, acute as well as chronic, can be effectively treated with homeopathic medicines.

Kidney Stones in Adults

Kidney stones, one of the most painful of the urologic disorders, have beset humans for centuries. Scientists have found evidence of kidney stones in a 7,000-year-old Egyptian mummy. Unfortunately, kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract. Each year, people make almost 3 million visits to health care providers and  more than half a million people go to emergency rooms for kidney stone problems.

Most kidney stones pass out of the body without any intervention by a physician. Stones that cause lasting symptoms or other complications may be treated by various techniques, most of which do not involve major surgery. Also, research advances have led to a better understanding of the many factors that promote stone formation and thus better treatments for preventing stones.

Introduction to the Urinary Tract

The urinary tract, or system, consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located below the ribs toward the middle of the back, one on each side of the spine. The kidneys remove extra water and wastes from the blood, producing urine. They also keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood. The kidneys produce hormones that help build strong bones and form red blood cells.

The urinary tract.

Narrow tubes called ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, an oval-shaped chamber in the lower abdomen. Like a balloon, the bladder’s elastic walls stretch and expand to store urine. They flatten together when urine is emptied through the urethra to outside the body.

What is a kidney stone?

A kidney stone is a hard mass developed from crystals that separate from the urine within the urinary tract. Normally, urine contains chemicals that prevent or inhibit the crystals from forming. These inhibitors do not seem to work for everyone, however, so some people form stones. If the crystals remain tiny enough, they will travel through the urinary tract and pass out of the body in the urine without being noticed.

Kidney stones may contain various combinations of chemicals. The most common type of stone contains calcium in combination with either oxalate or phosphate. These chemicals are part of a person’s normal diet and make up important parts of the body, such as bones and muscles.

A less common type of stone is caused by infection in the urinary tract. This type of stone is called a struvite or infection stone. Another type of stone, uric acid stones, are a bit less common, and cystine stones are rare.

Kidney stones in the kidney, ureter, and bladder.

Urolithiasis is the medical term used to describe stones occurring in the urinary tract. Other frequently used terms are urinary tract stone disease and nephrolithiasis. Doctors also use terms that describe the location of the stone in the urinary tract. For example, a ureteral stone—or ureterolithiasis—is a kidney stone found in the ureter. To keep things simple, the general term kidney stones is used throughout this fact sheet.

Gallstones and kidney stones are not related. They form in different areas of the body. Someone with a gallstone is not necessarily more likely to develop kidney stones.

Who gets kidney stones?

For unknown reasons, the number of people in the United States with kidney stones has been increasing over the past 30 years. In the late 1970s, less than 4 percent of the population had stone-forming disease. By the early 1990s, the portion of the population with the disease had increased to more than 5 percent. Caucasians are more prone to develop kidney stones than African Americans. Stones occur more frequently in men. The prevalence of kidney stones rises dramatically as men enter their 40s and continues to rise into their 70s. For women, the prevalence of kidney stones peaks in their 50s. Once a person gets more than one stone, other stones are likely to develop.

What causes kidney stones?

Doctors do not always know what causes a stone to form. While certain foods may promote stone formation in people who are susceptible, scientists do not believe that eating any specific food causes stones to form in people who are not susceptible.

A person with a family history of kidney stones may be more likely to develop stones. Urinary tract infections, kidney disorders such as cystic kidney diseases, and certain metabolic disorders such as hyperparathyroidism are also linked to stone formation.

In addition, more than 70 percent of people with a rare hereditary disease called renal tubular acidosis develop kidney stones.

Cystinuria and hyperoxaluria are two other rare, inherited metabolic disorders that often cause kidney stones. In cystinuria, too much of the amino acid cystine, which does not dissolve in urine, is voided, leading to the formation of stones made of cystine. In patients with hyperoxaluria, the body produces too much oxalate, a salt. When the urine contains more oxalate than can be dissolved, the crystals settle out and form stones.

Hypercalciuria is inherited, and it may be the cause of stones in more than half of patients. Calcium is absorbed from food in excess and is lost into the urine. This high level of calcium in the urine causes crystals of calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate to form in the kidneys or elsewhere in the urinary tract.

Other causes of kidney stones are hyperuricosuria, which is a disorder of uric acid metabolism; gout; excess intake of vitamin D; urinary tract infections; and blockage of the urinary tract. Certain diuretics, commonly called water pills, and calcium-based antacids may increase the risk of forming kidney stones by increasing the amount of calcium in the urine.

Calcium oxalate stones may also form in people who have chronic inflammation of the bowel or who have had an intestinal bypass operation, or ostomy surgery. As mentioned earlier, struvite stones can form in people who have had a urinary tract infection. People who take the protease inhibitor indinavir, a medicine used to treat HIV infection, may also be at increased risk of developing kidney stones.

Foods and Drinks Containing Oxalate

People prone to forming calcium oxalate stones may be asked by their doctor to limit or avoid certain foods if their urine contains an excess of oxalate.

High-oxalate foods—higher to lower

rhubarb
spinach
beets
swiss chard
wheat germ
soybean crackers
peanuts
okra
chocolate
black Indian tea
sweet potatoes
Foods that have medium amounts of oxalate may be eaten in limited amounts.

Medium-oxalate foods—higher to lower

grits
grapes
celery
green pepper
red raspberries
fruit cake
strawberries
marmalade
liver
What are the symptoms of kidney stones?

Kidney stones often do not cause any symptoms. Usually, the first symptom of a kidney stone is extreme pain, which begins suddenly when a stone moves in the urinary tract and blocks the flow of urine. Typically, a person feels a sharp, cramping pain in the back and side in the area of the kidney or in the lower abdomen. Sometimes nausea and vomiting occur. Later, pain may spread to the groin.

If the stone is too large to pass easily, pain continues as the muscles in the wall of the narrow ureter try to squeeze the stone into the bladder. As the stone moves and the body tries to push it out, blood may appear in the urine, making the urine pink. As the stone moves down the ureter, closer to the bladder, a person may feel the need to urinate more often or feel a burning sensation during urination.

If fever and chills accompany any of these symptoms, an infection may be present. In this case, a person should contact a doctor immediately.

How are kidney stones diagnosed?

Sometimes “silent” stones—those that do not cause symptoms—are found on x rays taken during a general health exam. If the stones are small, they will often pass out of the body unnoticed. Often, kidney stones are found on an x ray or ultrasound taken of someone who complains of blood in the urine or sudden pain. These diagnostic images give the doctor valuable information about the stone’s size and location. Blood and urine tests help detect any abnormal substance that might promote stone formation.

The doctor may decide to scan the urinary system using a special test called a computerized tomography (CT) scan or an intravenous pyelogram (IVP). The results of all these tests help determine the proper treatment.

Preventing Kidney Stones

A person who has had more than one kidney stone may be likely to form another; so, if possible, prevention is important. To help determine their cause, the doctor will order laboratory tests, including urine and blood tests. The doctor will also ask about the patient’s medical history, occupation, and eating habits. If a stone has been removed, or if the patient has passed a stone and saved it, a stone analysis by the laboratory may help the doctor in planning treatment.

The doctor may ask the patient to collect urine for 24 hours after a stone has passed or been removed. For a 24-hour urine collection, the patient is given a large container, which is to be refrigerated between trips to the bathroom. The collection is used to measure urine volume and levels of acidity, calcium, sodium, uric acid, oxalate, citrate, and creatinine—a product of muscle metabolism. The doctor will use this information to determine the cause of the stone. A second 24-hour urine collection may be needed to determine whether the prescribed treatment is working.

How are kidney stones treated?

Fortunately, surgery is not usually necessary. Most kidney stones can pass through the urinary system with plenty of water—2 to 3 quarts a day—to help move the stone along. Often, the patient can stay home during this process, drinking fluids and taking pain medication as needed. The doctor usually asks the patient to save the passed stone(s) for testing. It can be caught in a cup or tea strainer used only for this purpose.

Lifestyle Changes

A simple and most important lifestyle change to prevent stones is to drink more liquids—water is best. Someone who tends to form stones should try to drink enough liquids throughout the day to produce at least 2 quarts of urine in every 24-hour period.

In the past, people who form calcium stones were told to avoid dairy products and other foods with high calcium content. Recent studies have shown that foods high in calcium, including dairy products, may help prevent calcium stones. Taking calcium in pill form, however, may increase the risk of developing stones.

Patients may be told to avoid food with added vitamin D and certain types of antacids that have a calcium base. Someone who has highly acidic urine may need to eat less meat, fish, and poultry. These foods increase the amount of acid in the urine.

To prevent cystine stones, a person should drink enough water each day to dilute the concentration of cystine that escapes into the urine, which may be difficult. More than a gallon of water may be needed every 24 hours, and a third of that must be drunk during the night.

Medical Therapy

A doctor may prescribe certain medications to help prevent calcium and uric acid stones. These medicines control the amount of acid or alkali in the urine, key factors in crystal formation. The medicine allopurinol may also be useful in some cases of hyperuricosuria.

Doctors usually try to control hypercalciuria, and thus prevent calcium stones, by prescribing certain diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide. These medicines decrease the amount of calcium released by the kidneys into the urine by favoring calcium retention in  bone. They work best when sodium intake is low.

Rarely, patients with hypercalciuria are given the medicine sodium cellulose phosphate, which binds calcium in the intestines and prevents it from leaking into the urine.

If cystine stones cannot be controlled by drinking more fluids, a doctor may prescribe medicines such as Thiola and Cuprimine, which help reduce the amount of cystine in the urine.

For struvite stones that have been totally removed, the first line of prevention is to keep the urine free of bacteria that can cause infection. A patient’s urine will be tested regularly to ensure no bacteria are present.

If struvite stones cannot be removed, a doctor may prescribe a medicine called acetohydroxamic acid (AHA). AHA is used with long-term antibiotic medicines to prevent the infection that leads to stone growth.

People with hyperparathyroidism sometimes develop calcium stones. Treatment in these cases is usually surgery to remove the parathyroid glands, which are located in the neck. In most cases, only one of the glands is enlarged. Removing the glands cures the patient’s problem with hyperparathyroidism and kidney stones.

Surgical Treatment

Surgery may be needed to remove a kidney stone if it

does not pass after a reasonable period of time and causes constant pain
is too large to pass on its own or is caught in a difficult place
blocks the flow of urine
causes an ongoing urinary tract infection
damages kidney tissue or causes constant bleeding
has grown larger, as seen on follow-up x rays
Until 20 years ago, open surgery was necessary to remove a stone. The surgery required a recovery time of 4 to 6 weeks. Today, treatment for these stones is greatly improved, and many options do not require major open surgery and can be performed in an outpatient setting.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy
Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is the most frequently used procedure for the treatment of kidney stones. In ESWL, shock waves that are created outside the body travel through the skin and body tissues until they hit the denser stones. The stones break down into small particles and are easily passed through the urinary tract in the urine.

Several types of ESWL devices exist. Most devices use either x rays or ultrasound to help the surgeon pinpoint the stone during treatment. For most types of ESWL procedures, anesthesia is needed.

In many cases, ESWL may be done on an outpatient basis. Recovery time is relatively short, and most people can resume normal activities in a few days.

Complications may occur with ESWL. Some patients have blood in their urine for a few days after treatment. Bruising and minor discomfort in the back or abdomen from the shock waves can occur. To reduce the risk of complications, doctors usually tell patients to avoid taking aspirin and other medicines that affect blood clotting for several weeks before treatment.

Sometimes, the shattered stone particles cause minor blockage as they pass through the urinary tract and cause discomfort. In some cases, the doctor will insert a small tube called a stent through the bladder into the ureter to help the fragments pass. Sometimes the stone is not completely shattered with one treatment, and additional treatments may be needed.

As with any interventional, surgical procedure, potential risks and complications should be discussed with the doctor before making a treatment decision.

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy
Sometimes a procedure called percutaneous nephrolithotomy is recommended to remove a stone. This treatment is often used when the stone is quite large or in a location that does not allow effective use of ESWL.

In this procedure, the surgeon makes a tiny incision in the back and creates a tunnel directly into the kidney. Using an instrument called a nephroscope, the surgeon locates and removes the stone. For large stones, some type of energy probe—ultrasonic or electrohydraulic—may be needed to break the stone into small pieces. Often, patients stay in the hospital for several days and may have a small tube called a nephrostomy tube left in the kidney during the healing process.

One advantage of percutaneous nephrolithotomy is that the surgeon can remove some of the stone fragments directly instead of relying solely on their natural passage from the kidney.

Ureteroscopic Stone Removal
Although some stones in the ureters can be treated with ESWL, ureteroscopy may be needed for mid- and lower-ureter stones. No incision is made in this procedure. Instead, the surgeon passes a small fiberoptic instrument called a ureteroscope through the urethra and bladder into the ureter. The surgeon then locates the stone and either removes it with a cage-like device or shatters it with a special instrument that produces a form of shock wave. A small tube or stent may be left in the ureter for a few days to help urine flow. Before fiber optics made ureteroscopy possible, physicians used a similar “blind basket” extraction method. But this technique is rarely used now because of the higher risks of damage to the ureters.

Hope through Research

The Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) funds research on the causes, treatments, and prevention of kidney stones. The NIDDK is part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.

New medicines and the growing field of lithotripsy have greatly improved the treatment of kidney stones. Still, NIDDK researchers and grantees seek to answer questions such as

Why do some people continue to have painful stones?
How can doctors predict, or screen, those at risk for getting stones?
What are the long-term effects of lithotripsy?
Do genes play a role in stone formation?
What is the natural substance(s) found in urine that blocks stone formation?
Researchers are also developing new medicines with fewer side effects.

Points to Remember

A person with a family history of stones or a personal history of more than one stone may be more likely to develop more stones.
A good first step to prevent the formation of any type of stone is to drink plenty of liquids—water is best.
Someone who is at risk for developing stones may need certain blood and urine tests to determine which factors can best be altered to reduce that risk.
Some people will need medicines to prevent stones from forming.
People with chronic urinary tract infections and stones will often need a stone removed if the doctor determines that the stone is causing the infection. Patients must receive careful follow-up to be sure that the infection has cleared.
